Chapter History

It was Vicki Lynn Starland who recognized the need for this illustrious sorority to be established in the community of Conway and at the campus of the State College of Arkansas (SCA). She was the daughter of a member of the Delta Omega Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Other Greek organizations already existed at the campus of SCA but Starland felt the need to charter a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha on the campus. Starland along with 13 other young women, formed an interest group at SCA in the fall of 1973. The Delta Omega Omega petitioned to be the sponsor of the group; however, the chapter was nearly 100 miles away in Pine Bluff. Therefore, the graduate chapter in Little Rock, Beta Pi Omega, was chosen to be the sponsor chapter. South Central Regional Director Mary Louise Williams, who was the first regional director from Arkansas and a member of Beta Pi Omega, granted the interest group a chapter. On February 24, 1974, the Theta Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was charted. Thus allowing Alpha Kappa Alpha to have a presence at the State College of Arkansas and the community of Conway.

Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, the young chapter began making its mark on the local community. Some of the projects that were implemented during that era are still in place today. In 2009, The Chi Eta Omega chapter became the new sponsoring chapter for Theta Mu. Theta Mu suffered some hardships during the early years, but under the leadership of strong executive boards and through the efforts of dedicated members, Theta Mu has not only survived but flourished. After 40 years, Theta Mu is continuing to thrive and attain excellence. The chapter has received many prestigious awards such as Undergraduate Chapter of the Year five years in a row, Over All Greek Organization of the Year, Sorority of the Year, Highest G.P.A, Most Community Service, and Most Campus Involvement. Theta Mu is truly the "best of the best" and intends to maintain this level of excellence.
